Des,
Well written and so well captures the "feeling" of Tom Poole. I, too, often think of him and the lessons learned from him and the old Manchester Branch in general.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Des's wife here. I am, concretely, the lucky recipient of Tom's cottage advice. When Des told me that I was right on board....especially since I grew up on the Great Lakes. But whatever locale is your heart's desire (lake, mountain, urban hole-a-away) it's great advice to secure it first. We did wait until our second child to buy a house but it was worth it.

Beyond that, I do see Tom Poole reflected in Des in his business life. I met Des when we both were at Burrough's and Des was a middle management star. I learned a lot from him, and I still do.

Great article. I don't know, I got a lot of "maturing" to do, before I let go of my cellphone. Even "back in the day", during my honeymoon, I had a cellphone on me. To my wife's luck, there was no coverage at our resort.

Re. hiring. Great guideline. I personally like to to be in organization where vast majority of people I consider much smarter than me. It keeps me motivated. Unfortunately, corporate cockroachery is rampant and those organizations are more rare than a pink diamond.
